A selection of intimate landscapes, seascapes and still lifes. Reception from 5- 8pm. Harold Howell is a self-taught artist, a student of art history, an observer of nature, and a follower of the mystical tradition.
From the artist: When I was young and receiving my first impressions, I remember an underlying magic and mystery emanating from the physical world. The sky, the trees, the stones, the stars, around every corner there was some potential wonder that required only the spark of imagination to ignite. My belief is that the artists’ job is to explore the mystery - not to solve it, not to offer an explanation, but to say, here it is, make of it what you will…

Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD)
600 N. Market St. Wilmington, DE 19801
This exhibition features works by artist Timothy Duffield completed in England and America from 1960 through 2017. It also includes several new pieces completed this year that reflect the power of art to reawaken the creative spirit after a lengthy illness. Duffield’s work falls into a number of themes that embody and inform the subject and form of his oeuvre: the figure, landscape and sculpture, gardens, and historic and architectural references.
The earliest work in the exhibition is a sculpture Duffield created during his beaux arts sculpture studies in 1960 when he was 19 years old. Over the next 62 years, he has branched out into many other activities including studying printmaking, and in recent years experimenting anew with the use of the computer as his printmaking tool. Duffield’s large public commissions were a natural extension of his sculptural work, and he has continued to pursue drawing in its own right throughout his career, and not just as studies for sculpture. The artist invites you to come share his journey and celebrate the triumph of art over illness.
Duffield has always been a sculptor however, over his six-decade career, his work has evolved to include drawing and printmaking in addition to experimenting with the computer as a means of expression. Duffield has completed several large public commissions in the Mid-Atlantic including in Wilmington and farther afield in Atlanta. He has pursued drawing as works in their own right and not just as students for his sculptures. At the age of 81, Duffield continues to work creatively and intends to do so adapting as necessary to ensure he can realize his artistic visions.

The Grand Opera House / baby grand
818 N. Market St. Wilmington, DE 19801baby grand gallery: Sarah Baptist “Wilmington: An Artist’s View” Extended

Grand Gallery: Contemporary abstract artist, Yakime Akelá Brown returns to The Grand's baby grand Gallery with an exhibition entitled Le Piment de la Vie, which is French for The Spice of Life. This term is borrowed from the expression, "Variety is the spice of life," which is used to say that life is more interesting and enjoyable when it includes many different things. This aligns quite nicely with Yakime's artistic ethos: "I absolutely refuse to be restricted to one particular style or image. Simply put; it is boring, confining, and not a true reflection of who I am as a person. I would instead prefer to be known for my wide array of enduring works that speak to a full spectrum or art enthusiasts." Yakime's abstract works have been described as textural, colorful, sculptural, and full of motion and energy. Each creation generates its own vibe.
Baby grand Gallery:
Baby grand Gallery: Sarah Baptist loves painting urban landscapes. Sarah sees wonderful painting subjects all around her! The impact of vertical and horizontal structures…how they conflict and contrast with each other and yet morph into their own composed design fascinates Sarah, who is known for her paintings of poles and wires but enjoys painting all sorts of cityscapes and street scenes en plein air and in her home studio in North Wilmington.
As a theatrical scenic painter for 20+ years, Sarah helped create worlds physically on a stage. (Yes, even Delaware Theater Co!) Now as a full-time artist, she creates worlds on a smaller, more personal scale. Recently, Sarah focused on downtown Wilmington as her subject. This show features that work. You can see more of Sarah’s work at SarahBaptistArt.com or Instagram.com/sbaptistart

We all have passions and dreams to be discovered, pasts to be guessed at, and futures that are still to unfold. SOULS is a collection of portraits that seeks to both capture and tell some of those stories. Long fascinated by the human condition, Flavia Loreto aims to go beyond the physical externalities of her subjects, and to capture their very essence.
The exhibition, hosted in the hallways of Wilmington’s Music School of Delaware, shows 20 black and white portraits of men and women in different ages, nationalities and professions. The portraits are labeled only with the subject’s first name, ceding power to the audience to go beyond the image, imagining the stories behind the photographs and also to create new stories of their own.
Born and raised in Rome, Flavia Loreto developed her passion for portrait photography as a way to connect to others, and to better understand emotions and feelings. After 20 years living and working as a photographer in Germany, Flavia relocated to the US, where she continues to study the human condition through her photography. Among her exhibitions: Donne (Düsseldorf 2013), A Day in Naples (San Francisco 2017). She collaborated on books like - L’arte in cucina (Mondadori 2018) - and - La Valle del Silicio (Italian Foreign Ministry 2019).

ARTISTS’ STATEMENT: Prepare, then risk. Whether the project at hand is a Calligraphic Document, a Watercolor Painting or a combination of the two, the dynamic stroke is the holy grail of my work. Bravery in handling the pen and brush yields power. Much preliminary work goes into laying down the master stroke. I practice until the stroke is ready and then execute confidently and fearlessly. Hopefully, the proverbial “Stroke of Genius” is achieved. While a subject may be quiet, this is not the same as uncertainty and even calm pieces must be executed bravely.

Our local Sogetsu Brandywine Study Group with Midori Tanimune, Advisor, will exhibit unique works of Ikebana floral art ranging from basic arrangements to free style creations. This floral art form depicts the arranger’s stylized vision of nature as well as creating works of art using sculptural elements of line, space and mass with natural materials. All manner of flora, fresh as well as dried, may be combined with unconventional materials in Sogetsu arrangements making for very unique and varied compositions.

Lynne Robinson creates brilliantly colored designs with alcohol-ink." Alcohol-ink is a fascinating medium to work in – affording a myriad of possibilities created by inking tiles, metals, or non-porous paper. What starts out as a blank space ends up somewhere totally different than was originally planned – such is the nature of how the inks blend and dry and create their own world."
Her show features over 75 framed ink works, handmade notecards, inked necklaces – All for sale.
Living in the Newark – Elkton area since 1969, Lynne attended the University of Delaware, taught in Delaware public schools, and volunteered locally since retiring in 1997. A chance rescue of a 112-pound golden retriever named Boo in 2003 changed Lynne’s life and sent it on a course toward pet therapy. Now, founder and executive director of the pet-therapy organization, PAWS for People, Lynne is a believer of the profound and positive impact a visit from a pet can have on anyone – not only those physically, emotionally, or psychologically in need. Overseeing PAWS 650+ therapy teams, 13 employees, and 190 partnering sites where PAWS’ teams visit keeps Lynne out of trouble – most of the time. When she discovered the magic and vibrancy of alcohol inks during a class given at the Newark Arts Alliance, she quickly turned her spare time from emails to inking, inking, inking! She shares her love of alcohol ink through art festivals, demonstrations, and teaching classes.

'Neo Pop' is largely the term used to describe Joshua's body of work. The thought process takes on a satirical view of social, popular and cultural statements and ideas. He examines the American dream thru color while combining the cult of celebrity, comic aesthetics, music heroes, portrayed by strong projective narratives. While using familiar visual signs and icons, he arranges bright, layered paintings. Joshua uses a large arsenal of mediums that include aerosol, acrylic, oil and ink to just about anything he can get his hands on to give life and form to his style.
