Artist: “Delaware: One State, Many Stories”

learn more
This exhibit introduces the state’s history through a number of important topics. Delaware’s immigrant history, its maritime heritage, deep roots in agriculture, Wilmington’s evolution from an industrial hub to a financial center, its role on the war front and at home, and the many cultural and artistic contributions envelope visitors in First State history. “Journey To Freedom” located in the Jane and Littleton Mitchell Center for African American Heritage presents compelling perspectives of African Americans’ struggles for human rights, freedom and dignity in Delaware and the nation. From slavery to resistance, to forging faith and community, and from standing together for freedom and equality to serving an ambivalent nation during times of war, this groundbreaking exhibition chronicles the African American experience in Delaware. Built in 1798, Old Town Hall housed the city council’s meeting chambers, offices and jail and served as the headquarters and gathering place of civic organizations. The death of George Washington was observed in Old Town Hall in 1799, as were receptions for the Marquis de Lafayette and President Andrew Jackson. Old Town Hall, restored to its classical beauty, provides space for exhibitions, programs and musical performances throughout the year.
